Personality:
The first impression Gladion gives off is that of being a prickly punk kid who only trusts anyone as far as he can throw them. In fact, the first interaction he has with the game's protag is to ask their name, and then comment on how naïve it is if they answer truthfully, or to give a vague compliment about being smart enough to be wary if they hide their identity. He spends his time doing odd jobs for Team Skull, this game's resident group of somewhat bumbling thugs, and seems to put all his thoughts toward winning Pokemon battles, not caring much about anything other than his own strength. But while this first impression isn't exactly wrong, it is very incomplete.

For one, it quickly becomes clear that if nothing else, he cares deeply about his Pokemon. Type:Null is a constant companion, and he first claims to have a goal of making Null stronger, rather than himself. Throughout the game, it seems like he and Null have a strong connection, and it's later revealed that he ran away with Null as a way to protect it from being put into permanent cryo-sleep after it was labeled a failed experiment. Having grown up with his mother treating him more like a glorified decoration than a son, he's inclined to sympathise with Pokemon in the hands of trainers who don't care, and it bothers him when he sees it. Aside from the situation with Null, he does things like telling someone who he thinks isn't strong enough to beat him not to try, because all they'll do is hurt their Pokemon. His connection with Pokemon in general is further evidenced by the fact that he uses almost exclusively Pokemon that only evolve when they're at a high level of friendship with their trainer, and all of his Pokemon evolve over the course of the game.

But for all that he cares easily about Pokemon, people are a bit of a different matter. Between the family he grew up in, Team Skull, and trainers in general who only would see their Pokemon as tools, he's seen a lot of the ugly side of humanity. There's good reason for him being as distrustful as he is. In fact, prior to his adventures with the protag and Hau, his only friends are Pokemon. He makes a couple different comments about being sad and lonely, and how participating in Battle Royals is one of the few things that makes him feel better, letting him and Null "bury their sorrow in the crowd."

From the time he took Null and ran away from home to the end of the game, almost all he thought about was getting stronger. When he was younger and trying to protect Null, all he could do was run away, leaving his sister and the other experimental Pokemon behind. His goal of strength, ultimately, is less for his own benefit and more so he can stand up for what he cares about, so he can have better options than just running away. Because of that, winning battles and improving himself are very important concepts to him. When he runs across Hau, who doesn't mind losing as long as the battle was fun, he's utterly baffled by the concept and treats him like an idiot. Later on, though, he admits to having some respect for Hau, because he's willing to challenge his grandfather who's an island Kahuna, one of the strongest trainers in Alola. Given his own history with his mother, he can't help but look up to Hau's ability to go wholeheartedly into a battle even when he's likely to lose, especially when that battle is against a very powerful family member.

In the end, there are a few people he cares about. His family, for one. He loves his sister, and regrets that he just left her behind when he ran away with Null. And despite everything, he doesn't hate his mother, either. When all is said and done, he refuses to leave her in the world with the Ultrabeasts, and tries to rationalise why she got so obsessed about them in the first place, even though that doesn't excuse it.

He develops a very high level of respect and trust for the game's protag, eventually giving them another Type:Null that had been created the same way as the one he ran away with. But even though he clearly cares a lot about the them, he's still hesitant about showing it. He comes to the celebration after the protag beats the Elite Four, but doesn't make his presence know, briefly watching the festivities from behind a tree. The comment he makes at the end of the game about their relationship to each other is "I know we're not friends. But we're not enemies anymore, either." His hesitance to show affection in a direct way probably stems from the same reasons he doesn't trust easily to begin with. Between his mother and Team Skull (who never accepted him as an official member), he's more or less been constantly told he's not good enough. Even if he might consider someone a friend in his own mind, it's likely he doesn't dare make the assumption that the feeling is mutual. But he's grateful to have found someone he can trust, either way.
